styles of learning of Kolb in the classroom

David Kolb created a series of theories on the learning. He was pioneering in new techniques and models of the education, in addition to generating multitude of debates with respect to the styles and strategies of the learning.

Their works in the area of the education emphasized mainly in their model on the learning styles, that combined the form in which the humans we perceived and we processed the information.

Their works opened an important hollow in the knowledge of the human ability in the area of education and are nowadays, decades later, still studied and debated. It is without a doubt, one of the most influential characters in this matter.

What are the styles of learning of Kolb?

Davi Kolb explains us in its model that the learning is the fruit of the form in which the people perceive and later they process the information that has received.

Although the information is the same, exist different types from people who are much more effective at the time of processing and to understand different situations although these they are the same. In addition to existing different forms to perceive a information, also different forms occur to process it.

For Kolb two opposed types exist by whom the INFORMATION IS PERCEIVED:

  • That one information that is perceived of a concrete way.
  • That one information that is perceived of abstract form (or subjective).

And also it told us that two opposed types exist TO PROCESS the INFORMATION:

  • Some people begin to process the information of more effective way if they put it in practice.
  • Other people are more effective processing this information if they meditate it of reflective form.

Characteristics and types of the styles of learning of Kolb

When Kolb realized that existed forms crossed in the form in which the people learn defined these opposed forms TO PERCEIVE and TO PROCESS the information in their model.

Kolb tried to find a point of definition within a model of four quadrants to be able to explain of a much more clear way the different styles from learning.

The four quadrants of the styles of learning of Kolb:

Convergent style

They are people who enjoy putting in practices their ideas. When they face a problem try search a unique solution and makes specific, they do not look for many solutions. They move away of the abstract forms and they try to perceive the information of very precise way.

They try to use the deductive reasoning most frequently. They are very effective presenting practical diagrams, projects, practical demonstrations, creating general structures of maps, synopses, etc€¦

Divergent style

They are very imaginative, its strength is the creativity, are people who have many ideas constantly, getting to face a problem tens of different forms. They own much imagination and mental restlessness together with a creative form to see the world. These people have an anxious mind since they need a feedback to feel realised.

Asimilador style

They are people who act coverall under abstract situations. They are ideal to create theoretical models, act under the reflective observation. They are able to create an inductive reasoning and conceptualizar different observations in a single. Usually they are scientists. They prefer coverall the theory to the practice.

Accomodating style

To this style usher is called to him because the person emphasizes in situations where there is to adapt to different problems. They are pragmatic people and they like the active experimentation. Mainly they like to enter itself in new experiences, to learn something new. They feel comfortable with the people and usually they are great speakers.

Conclusion

The styles of learning of Kolb try to explain the difficult task of grouping and of defining the processes of the learning. Its model is very respected nowadays and still it is continued studying in many universities.

This model explains in addition the predominant personality to these people, their conductismo and its form to construct its world: it see constructivism.

In many studies this reference is taken to make mention to that the learning processes usually go also bound to the personality and the form in which that person is related to the others and with its world.

, The study of the styles of learning of Kolb really tries to create a classification to the different forms in that we perceived and we processed the information. They exist multitude of theories of the learning that try to give light to the difficult world of the human mind.
